Who Is the King?
Sermon by Pastor Benjamin Chen
Passage from Samuel I 13:5-15
Pastor Ben shared with the 1.5 Generation Congregation at EFCI on the topic of “Who is the King?” The sermon was delivered through the story of King Soul where Pastor Ben reminded us to take a moment and pray about the times when we try to control of our own lives instead of allowing God’s hands to take control.
Power conflicts happen on a daily basis in our lives: at work, in marriage, and many others… But we do this most often with God, on who has the control in our life.
We Face Adversity in Life
Philistines were gathering weapons to get ready to fight Saul. However Saul’s army is lacking weapon, which negatively impacted the morale of the battlefield. Our lives are often similar to Saul’s situation. A lot of times the adversities we face such as sickness and temptations can appear to be much bigger than us. And similar to Saul, we could feel like it is impossible to defeat the enemy.
We Face God’s Delay in Life
In this difficult situation, Samuel, the prophet who represented the presence of God was not with them physically. This reminds us that God may delay His help in our lives. In these situations, we need to restrain ourselves from handling the problem on our own because the likely outcomes are usually worse.
Is God the King of My Life?
In the story, Saul did not wait for Samuel, and he made the Lords offering by himself, which was prohibited at the time for anyone who was not a prophet, as a result, Saul ultimately lost the throne.
In actuality, God is not angry because Soul broke a law. God is angry because Saul thinks he, instead of God, is the King of Israel.
When facing every decision, we need to pause, take a moment to pray, and give the control of our lives back to him.
We need to challenge ourselves whether God is truly our King or are we just relying on our own methods to resolve our issues.
